Lunar Nodes and the Eclipse Cycle
The lunar nodes are intimately connected to the eclipse cycle. Eclipses occur when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align, which happens only when the Moon is near one of its nodes. Therefore, the lunar nodes are the key to understanding the timing and location of eclipses. |
A Solar Eclipse occurs at the New Moon when the Sun and the Moon are in alignment with the Earth. This alignment causes the Moon to cast a shadow on the Earth, creating a Solar Eclipse. Solar eclipses denote new beginnings and fresh starts.
During a solar eclipse, the light of the Sun is obscured, and then it re-emerges. This process symbolizes the revelation of hidden truths, both about ourselves and our circumstances. They are often seen as catalysts for profound transformation. They can bring about sudden shifts and changes that may feel disruptive in the moment but ultimately serve our personal evolution and growth. They challenge us to let go of old patterns and step into new ways of being aligning with our life purpose.
Indeed, the location of solar eclipses in relation to the North Node or the South Node has different astrological implications. Solar eclipses, in general, signal significant changes and new beginnings, but the Node they align with provides crucial context to these transformations.
A solar eclipse conjunct the North Node sign is known as a North Node eclipse. A North Node eclipse heralds significant beginnings aligned with our future growth and destiny affecting us from 6 to 18 months.
During a North Node eclipse, new opportunities often arise that propel us forward towards our karmic path. These openings might feel challenging or outside our comfort zone, as they often align with the qualities we need to develop, pushing us to expand beyond our familiar patterns. The Universe, during this time, encourages us to step into unknown territories, providing us with experiences we need for personal evolution. Themes usually revolve around our issues dealing with our dependencies, selfishness, ego and where we repress our emotions.
Such an eclipse might also present situations requiring us to embody the qualities of the North Node sign. For instance, a North Node eclipse in Aries might push us towards asserting our independence, demonstrating courage, or taking the initiative in certain aspects of our lives.
On the flip side, when a solar eclipse aligns with the South Node, it is referred to as a South Node eclipse. This celestial event amplifies our areas of confidence and harmonizes our strengths with our destined path. It allows us to perceive the challenges of the North Node cycle from a fresh perspective, ushering in novel emotions and sentiments.
Rather than a passive release to create space, this dynamic release is propelled by a reinvigorated commitment to our aspirations and life’s purpose. Our sense of mission is rejuvenated, motivating us to take impactful action for the greater good. It’s a juncture often marked by societal shifts and upheaval.
For instance, envision a South Node eclipse in Libra invigorating us to engage in diplomatic discussions, catalyzing transformative changes in partnerships or within communities. Driven by a profound cause, we are empowered to align with destiny and heed a higher calling. While an excess of confidence in our newfound approach might surface, it’s all part of our learning curve as we acquire fresh skills. As the North Node lunar eclipse approaches, we’ll need to seamlessly integrate the consequences of our actions.
A Lunar Eclipse, on the other hand, occurs at the Full Moon when the Moon is near one of its nodes, and the Earth is aligned between the Sun and the Moon. This alignment causes the Earth to cast a shadow on the Moon, creating a Lunar Eclipse, denoting a time of release, and letting go. They often bring closure to situations, relationships, or patterns that no longer serve our highest good. This can be a time of significant endings, making way for new beginnings.
The shadow of the Earth falls on the Moon, symbolizing the focus of our own ‘shadow self’ – the unconscious aspects of our personality that we may not be aware of. This can be a time of deep self-discovery, where hidden fears, desires, and truths come to light. It provokes emotional intensity and inner transformation as our sensitivity increases and we come face to face with our emotional selves. Past issues resurface for resolution and acknowledgment of old karma.
When a lunar eclipse is conjunct the North Node, it’s seen as a North Node eclipse. A lunar eclipse in the North Node sign, therefore, highlights the areas where we need to evolve and signals potent shifts that bring us closer to our destiny.
North Node lunar eclipses often trigger intense emotions related to our future path. They may bring realizations, insights, or situations that expose the gap between where we are and where we need to be, urging us to step out of our comfort zone and face our karmic path. This is often revealed through actions and events from the solar eclipse in the south node. We are integrating a wounded psyche with our heroic display from the solar eclipse, acknowledging where we acted from a wound rather than from our higher self.
During a North Node lunar eclipse, we might feel an emotional pull towards the qualities of the North Node sign. For instance, a North Node lunar eclipse in Leo could trigger a longing to express ourselves more creatively, authentically, or confidently.
On the other hand, when a lunar eclipse is conjunct with the South Node, it’s considered a South Node eclipse. The South Node represents our past, including patterns and tendencies that we default to, but may not serve our growth. A South Node lunar eclipse thus signifies emotional release and letting go. It’s a time when outdated patterns, emotional baggage, or attachments come to the fore, inviting us to acknowledge and release them. The Sun’s power supersedes the Moon’s intuitive nature, allowing us to let go of the past and envision, and enact, new forward movements.
These eclipses offer profound opportunities for healing and release. Emotional revelations might occur that help us recognize what we need to let go of, allowing us to move forward unburdened. For example, a South Node lunar eclipse in Aquarius might reveal where we’ve been overly detached, where we have lacked courage and over-intellectualized the movements of our heart, providing a chance to release such patterns.
The impact of the nodes and eclipses on a personal level depends on where they fall in your natal chart. Each house in astrology represents a different area of life, and the house where an eclipse occurs shows where you’re likely to experience significant changes and transformations.
For instance, if an eclipse occurs in your first house, it may prompt changes related to your identity, appearance, or personal goals. If it occurs in your seventh house, it could signify changes in your relationships or partnerships.
Similarly, the house where your North Node is located shows the area of life where you’re being called to grow and evolve, while the house of your South Node indicates where you have talents and skills, but also where you may need to release old patterns or move outside of your comfort zone.
Challenging Moments of Eclipses: Collectively & Personally
Eclipses are known to have a profound impact on the collective consciousness and can often coincide with significant global events. When an outer planet, such as Mars, aligns with (or opposes the location of a recent eclipse, it can trigger significant events like natural disasters or local conflicts.
The location of these events often aligns with the path where the eclipse was most visible. This is because the energy of the eclipse is believed to be most potent in these areas. For instance, if an eclipse was most visible in a particular area over Europe, that region might experience heightened tension, leading to conflicts or natural disasters, as has been demonstrated with the World Wars.
On a personal level, eclipses can also bring about significant changes and challenges. When a solar or lunar eclipse makes a turbulent aspect (such as a square or opposition) to a person’s natal chart, it can indicate an unfavorable trend for that individual. (You can check your chart below or book a session to find out more). So, while each of us may not be significantly impacted by every eclipse, we are more likely to be impacted by at least one in their 18-month cycle.
These challenging aspects can bring about periods of upheaval, transformation, and growth. They can disrupt the status quo and force individuals to confront issues they’ve been avoiding. This can be a time of crisis, but it’s also a time of opportunity. The changes brought about by these aspects can lead to personal growth and evolution.
The effects of these aspects might not be immediate. Eclipses can set off trends that unfold over 6 months or more. This is why astrologers often advise individuals to pay attention to the themes and issues that arise during eclipse seasons, as they can provide precious clues about the challenges and opportunities that lie up to a year and a half ahead.

Where we are in the Lunar Nodes’ cycleSpeaking of the nodes and eclipses may come across as esoteric since pinpointing exactly how it will impact you depends on the configuration of your natal chart. But we can look at larger areas of impact on a global scale by pivotal events from the most recent history to today.
When the Nodes were in Gemini and Sagittarius, we had the Covid crisis which brought the restriction of movement. With the South Node in Sagittarius, the international borders were closed. We were not giving free rein to explore and undoubtedly some of our worldviews were forced to be confronted with the new reality. We were being asked to find solutions in our immediate environment (North Node in Gemini). We were all made to actively seek out information and be curious for more and more input, a dominant trait for Gemini.
When the Nodes moved into Taurus and Scorpio, we had to cope with financial and energy challenges. We had to come to grips with redefining what we value for ourselves and our security in a new world that was emerging (Taurus North Node). With the South Node in Scorpio, the sign of shared resources, we have learned to no longer rely on traditional sources of energy and become resource self-reliant. And if we clung to returning to the world the way things were out of comfort, we’ve set ourselves up for a huge karmic lesson…
…on co-dependence, a theme of the south node in Libra. And while this will look at some of our more intimate relationships, on a collective level (deeply geared by transformative Pluto), this will hurt where we over rely on broken systems. We are now (as of July 2023) in the Nodes of the signs of identity, Aries and Libra. We are asked to find a balance between who we really are – our aspirations, desires, rights, and freedoms – and who we are in our relationships, our social networks and in the greater political and economic society. |
Because the Nodes are always opposing each other, there are only 12 possibilities that can occur in a chart. Their meaning is derived partially from the sign that they are in and the house in which it resides in your chart.
Keep in mind that the Nodes are more concerned with growth and evolution than with right or wrong. The North Node indicates attributes we need to cultivate for soul growth, whereas the South Node depicts patterns we are accustomed to but need to move from.
Just as importantly, on a personal level, the houses in which the axis of the nodes falls highlight an area of your life that will be marked by moments of opportunity, tension and direct challenge during their 18.5-year transit. These never change and will follow you through this life.
Remember, the nodes’ influence in the houses will also be colored by the signs they’re in, as well as any planets they’re interacting with in the natal chart.
As contemporary astrologers, the Nodes serve as pivotal starting points within our client consultations. They provide a gateway to discovering a path that fulfills not only our physical and mental aspects but also our spiritual essence. Amid the clamor of the external world, which often tries to dictate our identity, actions, and emotions, the Nodes guide us toward an authentic trajectory aligned with our true purpose.
The overview presented above aims to offer a glimpse into the direction you should explore in your quest. However, owing to the distinct nature of your natal chart, the narrative it weaves becomes richer and more intricate as we delve into the interplay between the nodes and your personal planets, further augmented by the ongoing celestial transits.
