While you may be used to astrologers looking ahead, there are vital moments for us to look backward to understand a present moment capacity–the capacity to change, capacity for growth, capacity to heal or seal fates in the choices we make. As Pluto dances back and forth over the 29° of Capricorn, it is underlining key lessons for us to learn during this time that will affect the world at large for hundreds of years. We will never see Pluto in Capricorn again in our lifetime.

Its impact does not work as quickly as the moon or Mercury. Pluto, the planet associated with transformation and rebirth, brings forth intense and often profound energies over the course of decades. By understanding the nature of this energy, it will be easier for us to better apprehend what’s going on, to keep a certain distance from events, or at least to understand their deeper meaning, and rather than suffer from them, to harness their exceptional potential for personal and collective development.

Drawing parallels between astrological archetypes and the economic and social sectors affected by this transit, we shed light on the potential shifts and changes we may witness. By examining real-life examples of world events occurring during or around previous similar transits, we gain insights into the transformative potential of this energetic configuration.

Here, we will explore the powerful work of Pluto, how Capricorn influences the direction of his work, the manifestation over its 15-year residency here in order to understand what is being asked of us in present-day (2022-2024) as it passes over 29° – an anaretic degree of high importance in astrology (which is furthered explored in this blog

Pluto Activation in Capricorn

Pluto helps us, but more often leaves us no other choice but to transform, evolve, and understand the impact of our subconscious and karmic baggage on our controlling and limiting behaviors. In other words, to purge ourselves from what is no longer helping us, let go of the dead.

Pluto’s work can be identified through four types of behaviors:

  • Crisis (intense emotional experience often associated with a definitive loss of something we were very (too) attached to in order to)
  • Osmosis (karmic experiences we feel compelled to integrate into our life and are transforming us, such as a relationship)
  • Block (focusing all our attention and triggering a compulsive need to dive to find the root of the (unconscious) issue)
  • Obsessive impulsion to awaken a dormant capability (non-cataclysmic but requires more will and perseverance than all others)

It does so to remind us of three universal truths:

    • our deepest attachments are the causes of all our suffering
    • life is impermanent, the only permanent thing is death and therefore everything and everyone can and should change and try to evolve for the better, transcending the instinctual to reach for the divine
    • our dark sides and moments are places of immense treasures and creativity through renewal

Pluto comes to strip our society of what is dead, corrupt, or no longer serving us.

The sign of Capricorn holds a significant role in the cosmic tapestry, as it relates to the crystallization of social beliefs and habits into a set of rules and regulations that allow a society to function harmoniously. It signifies the very essence of authority, enforcing the rules, societal standards, and limits that shape our collective existence. In turn, Capricorn points to the structures, traditions, heritage, authority figures, and foundations that form the bedrock of our individual lives.

Within the broader societal context, Capricorn represents the various pillars upon which our civilization rests. It encompasses our governing bodies, institutions, laws, and systems designed to maintain order and balance. It symbolizes the police and the army, which uphold the principles of law and protect the well-being of the community. Capricorn further signifies the patriarchal systems that have historically shaped our social dynamics, alongside the economic, financial, and political systems that govern our societies. It is through the lens of Capricorn that we examine the workings of capitalism, corporations, and the intricate power structures that influence our lives. It also casts a light on the autocratic tendencies that can emerge within established systems.

The Evolutionary objective of Pluto in Capricorn, both at a collective and individual level

Pluto’s transformative influence in Capricorn serves as a catalyst for profound change and evolution. It arrives with the purpose of purging our societal systems from their outdated and corrupt parts, thereby creating space for the emergence of the new. Just as Pluto is associated with death and rebirth, its transit through Capricorn signifies the death of old paradigms and the birth of new possibilities.

During this transit, we are called to critically examine the structures and systems that have governed our lives for so long. The relentless intensity of Pluto’s energy compels us to confront the shadow aspects of authority, traditions, and societal foundations. It exposes the flaws and injustices ingrained within these structures, inviting us to reimagine and reconstruct them from a more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable perspective.

As we witness the breakdown of outdated systems, it is essential to hold a vision of what can emerge from the ashes. Pluto’s transformative power in Capricorn presents us with an opportunity to co-create a society that embraces authenticity, compassion, and respect for both humanity and the Earth. By actively participating in the process of purging and rebuilding, we can contribute to the birth of a more just, balanced, and harmonious world.

Through our collective efforts, we have the potential to dismantle oppressive systems, redefine power dynamics, and cultivate a society that honors the interconnectedness of all beings. Let us embrace this profound transformative energy, for within the depths of Pluto’s influence lies the potential for radical and lasting change, paving the way for a future that truly embodies the positive side of this powerful transit.

The path of Pluto from 2008 thru 2024

As we reflect on Pluto’s global impacts through the sign, we encourage you to reflect back on your personal life in not only how these larger events impacted you, but any key events that happened in your life around similar time. This will help address the closure being asked of you during these final months.

Pluto entered the sign of Capricorn over three ingresses from January to November 2008 forming a trine with Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn from 2007 to 2009, creating a natural ease and a “power-up” to its natural qualities.

It started its work with the subprime mortgage crisis which soon escalated to what is now dubbed the Great Depression.

Over the course of its 15-year transit, it mostly squared with Uranus from 2009 to 2019, the principle of rebellion, innovation and liberation. This aspect peaked in between 2013 and 2015:

  • empowering rebellious movement with new technologies (Arab Spring / Maidan revolution in Ukraine / Hong Kong protests)
  • giving way to antiestablishment politics and the rise of populism, protectionism and political extremes (Trump election, Brexit, rise of far-right parties everywhere in existing democracies, Turkey, Hungary, Poland), but also breaking the old right-left division of power in some places
  • justifying the unexpected use of violence and increased control by challenged dictators, autocrats or religious movements (annexation of Crimea by Russia, wars on ISIS, Paris and Boston terror attacks, Venezuela, China and Russia leaders “elected” for life)
  • allowing us to discover the face of Pluto for the first time thanks to our technological advance when New Horizons performed a close flyby of the planet for the first time in our human history

However, perhaps the most crucial realization brought forth by the escalating awareness of our world’s state is the profound understanding of the deep-seated decay of infrastructure and impending peril our planet faces after centuries of relentless resource exploitation and large growth of population.

While the topic of climate change gradually entered mainstream consciousness in the 1980s, it took hold as a subject of scientific investigation in the 1990s, transitioning into an undeniable and alarming fact in the 2000s. However, the past decade witnessed a significant shift in our perception, as climate change emerged not only as an ecological crisis, but also as a profound political and systemic failure.

The ramifications of climate change extend far beyond rising temperatures and extreme weather events. They reveal the cracks and shortcomings ingrained within our social, economic, and political systems. The exploitation of resources, unsustainable practices, and the pursuit of endless growth have created an unsustainable path, leading us to the brink of environmental catastrophe.

The politicization of it allowed capitalism to escape responsibility in order for larger financial gain and continue access to community and global resources. Past tax funding for communal resources were raided, further bankrupting individuals by no or limited relief when large areas are affected by the changed climate. The narrative that each of us could combat it single handedly through recycling, composting and watching our carbon footprint ignores that industrialized perpetrators outperforming us in droves with their negative impact.

Just like Pluto in Leo had brought us the threat of nuclear Armageddon, a natural disaster Armageddon now seems to loom over Pluto in Aquarius.

Interestingly, the transit of Pluto in Capricorn has coincided with significant reports that underscore the seriousness, urgency, and inevitability of the risks we face, emphasizing the need for swift and unified action to avoid even greater crises. Notably, three crucial reports were released during this transit, each shedding light on the pressing issues we must address.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), an authoritative body under the United Nations, issued its three latest reports, focusing on assessing the impact of climate change, proposing concrete solutions, and tracking our progress. The conclusions drawn by these reports were clear, stark, and deeply polarizing for its economic and political ramifications. They served as a wake-up call, reminding us of the dire consequences of inaction and the urgent need for collective efforts.

    • 2007-2008: Warming of the climate system is unequivocal / Many impacts [of climate change] can be reduced, delayed or avoided by mitigation
    • 2013: Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia / Increasing magnitudes of [global] warming increase the likelihood of severe, pervasive, and irreversible impacts / Without new policies to mitigate climate change, projections suggest an increase in global mean temperature in 2100 of 3.7 to 4.8 °C, relative to pre-industrial levels
    • 2021: it is only possible to avoid warming of 1.5 °C (2.7 °F) or 2.0 °C (3.6 °F) if massive and immediate cuts in greenhouse gas emissions are made / major inevitable and irreversible climate changes

While there was a glimmer of hope when countries came together to sign the COP 21 treaty in Paris in 2014, committing to coordinated measures in the fight against climate change, subsequent years witnessed the rise of populism, protectionism, and isolationism, which impeded our united progress.

The release of the final report came one year after the transformative triple conjunction of Pluto, Saturn, and Jupiter that occurred between January and April 2020. This celestial alignment not only marked the onset of the pandemic but also brought about a profound disruption, immobilizing our modern society for nearly 18 months.

The Pandemic: Pluto’s Global Act of Transformation

In the final decans of Capricorn, it gave the opportunity to highlight the underbelly of our structures and reveal the impotent nature of our “recovery” of fallen systems. The pandemic, believed to have been triggered by the rapid deforestation of our planet and the resulting impact on wildlife adaptation, served as a global awakening. It exposed the fragility of our systems and highlighted the possibility of concerted actions to save the planet. As cities across Asia experienced a sudden emergence from the thick pollution fog that often shrouds them, a glimmer of possibility emerged. The crisis compelled governments and individuals to consider drastic changes in habits, leading to a reduction in pollution levels and demonstrating the potential for rapid and substantial results.

Pluto, in its insidious and transformative mission, planted the seed of this health crisis, pushing governments to delve deep into debt to sustain the old systems. Governments sought to reinforce control over individuals and faced various bottlenecks as we attempted to emerge from our collective slumber. But it most importantly also planted the seed of an alternative route that everyone caught a glimpse of and now struggle to ignore despite the societal pressure to do so.

This scientific recognition and societal earthquake should have served as a wake-up call, beckoning us to re-evaluate our values, behaviors, and collective responsibilities, but instead most went back into regressive modes and our leaders fell for the same petty fights we thought we had escaped from. There is an undeniable element of masochism inherent in Capricorn’s energy, where we seem to invite Pluto to deliver greater losses until we truly grasp the lessons at hand. Eventually though, and despite the ongoing resistance of some unable to free themselves, the events will prompt us to confront the uncomfortable truths and acknowledge the urgent need for transformative action. Whether we realize it or not, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment, where our choices and actions will shape the fate of not only our planet but also the future of humanity.

Today, we find ourselves on the onset of the next chapter, where the spectre of financial and economic collapse looms large. Leaders are grappling with the task of regulating an economy crippled by debt and inflation, attempting to balance the gas pedal of social protectionary measures with the brakes of interest rate hikes. It is becoming increasingly evident that the situation is at risk of spiraling out of control.
